Distance sessions are very easy, and many people love that you don’t have to travel to receive healing. You can just pick up the phone! This is especially useful in situations where you have a super-busy schedule, a health challenge or anything else that may keep you from traveling to a healer. I’ve also done email sessions on babies in the womb, and small children who are not yet able to verbally communicate their challenges. However, I only do this when I receive soul permission from the prospective recipient.
Several clients have shared that in addition to the convenience, some of their most profound releases from long-term emotional issues took place during distance sessions. They attributed this to the fact that, even though they felt very comfortable & safe with me in-person (when I used to do in-person sessions), they were still embarrassed to deeply cry in front of anyone. In the comfort of their home, they could sob, shout, etc, without worrying what anyone might think or wanting to control their experience in any way.
That said, I’m aware of reservations people have about distance sessions. For example, I’ve had clients share that they wanted to do a session with me in person before doing distance work because they felt they could get a better sense of who I am and what my energy & work are like. I agree that it’s important to know who you’re working with, especially in intuitive healing. However, I would offer that my picture and written words can give you a pretty clear idea. I’m also happy to chat for a few minutes on the phone to help you get an even stronger impression of what I’m like and whether our energies, personalities or other traits are compatible for you.
I’ve also had clients share that they can’t do session work in their own surroundings – their homes, offices, etc., are too stressful, noisy, busy or messy. They believe these things inhibit their ability to relax and receive the healing energy. I understand this perspective, but I would offer that there are many, many places you could go that are quiet and beautiful. I’ve had clients call me from beaches, parks, fountains or other areas that they enjoy. And, if they felt uncomfortable getting out of the car in those spaces, they simply relaxed inside their vehicle during the session while looking out at the beauty around them.
I would also offer that believing your surroundings must be ‘perfect’ or ‘zen’ in order to do healing work may be a limiting belief. Please consider that your peace is within you, not outside of you. Nothing and no one around you needs to be perfect or to change for you to have peace, happiness, healing or anything else. However, learning to live that truth is a process. There’s also nothing wrong or bad in wanting to go to an office and see someone face-to-face for session work. If this is what you want, I trust you will find exactly the right person to help you on your path.
It may help to think of distance healings as being similar to making a cell phone call. Several hundred years ago, the thought of using a small, hand-held device to contact anyone on the planet might have seemed impossible or outrageous. Even so, the energy used for cell phone communication always existed. We just had to develop the technology and understanding that gave us a means to perceive and utilize the energy. Similarly, the idea of energy work may seem outlandish today, but I have every faith that science will one day develop a means to clearly identify the healing energies, like Reiki, that already exist all around us.
So, let’s get back to making that call… What connects your cell phone to someone else’s when you call them? Energy. You can’t physically perceive the energy of your phone’s signal, yet you’re still able to use that energy to make calls. By the same token, you can’t physically perceive Reiki’s energy, but it can still connect two or more people to do healing work with a ‘signal’ that’s always crystal clear! This is possible because, just like cell phones, every person has an energetic signature that is different from all others. This uniqueness is what allows intuitive healing and communication to be sent to and received by a specific individual.
Reiki enables me to successfully ‘call’, or connect, and do intuitive healing work with anyone, anywhere. There’s nowhere that healing energy cannot be received.
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO RECEIVE HEALINGS?
Even though I’m not physically present, Reiki energy can go anywhere. As I offer Reiki, you may experience warmth, coolness, tingling, or a number of other physical sensations that are your body’s way of letting you know you’re receiving it. You may also have waves of peace, love, or other emotional experiences, as well as possibly seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling or ‘knowing’ your being is receiving Reiki’s healing energy. That said, it’s important to share that these are all intuitive awarenesses. If your intuition has not yet blossomed, you may simply begin to relax quiet a bit, or even drift off to sleep, which is also perfectly fine. Relaxation is a HUGE step toward healing.
It’s important to know that Reiki is very powerful, but it’s also very gentle. Your body will only take in the amount that it’s ready and willing to accept. However, no conscious thought is needed – the healing will take place naturally, like breathing. Your only ‘job’ during a session is to relax, but even if you feel frazzled, no amount of ‘mental chatter will interfere with the healing.
For each session, I will not only offer Reiki energy, but also do whatever I know to do or am called to do to support your healing . I’ll do whatever I’m guided to do to support your healing.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE IN SESSION FORMATS?
There are many ways to conduct distance healing sessions. In my practice, I often do email, phone or internet (Skype, etc) sessions, depending upon your desire and need.
The following is a brief description of each type of session. I try not to remain rigid about the content or format of the sessions, so that each person can receive whatever serves their highest good:
Phone and Internet Sessions:
I’m very flexible about how we do these sessions, but to give you a general idea of what is possible, once I contact you via the phone number or online video method of your choice, here is what can happen..
Sharing – as needed:
Whether it’s physical, mental or emotional in nature, I find it often helps to take some time to talk about it. So, we usually start by discussing the situation and any upset you may have around it. This can take 15-40 minutes, as needed.
Some people have a laundry list of things they’d like to vent about in session. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, but I’ve found it’s much more helpful to pick the challenge or area that is most affecting you as a primary focus for the session, rather than trying to gain perspective and change every single challenge in a 90 minute period. Then, we can look at additional challenges in future sessions.
That said, it tends to be true that working on one thing in your life often impacts all the other areas as well. This is because most situations and conditions are intertwined. As you bring healing to one, the others begin to shift and heal as well. Even greater shifts take place when we work on each area specifically, but a general shift will still take place simply because each area of your life impacts the others to some degree.
If there’s nothing you wish to discuss, we can begin energy work. Or, if you need to share first, this will happen after we’ve spent some time addressing a particular challenge. This usually lasts 20-45 minutes, depending upon factors like your schedule needs or how long we spent discussing an area of your life.
Several approaches to the energy work are possible, depending upon what you want or need. You have full control over your session. If you know what you’d like, I’ll do my best to accommodate your request. If you’re unsure, I’ll make some suggestions of different approaches we can take and let you decide what sounds best.
The following are just a 2 examples. We can mix and match these approaches, or try anything else you might like in order to tailor your session to your needs.
Energy work in silence –
I can do the energy work in silence for all or any part of the session. As this happens, I can also keep track of any intuitive information that may come up. Then, I’ll share it with you at the end of the session. I find this is often helpful because it enables you to have your own experiences without my interrupting or interfering. However, some people prefer to have me share as I perceive, and if that serves you, I’m happy to do so.
If you’d like silence, I can also hang up the call or video session to allow you complete silence. Then, I can either email you things that came up while I did the energy work, or offer no feedback, depending upon your preference.
Energy work in guided meditations –
This is often especially useful if you’re working through a challenge. We can do this for all or part of the energy portion of your session.
We can use the guided meditation to help you connect with and comfort a part of you that is struggling, upset, or triggered into judgment. Then, we can help you re-align with your soul’s awareness of who you are (a being of light & love) and what’s possible for you (everything).
Throughout the meditation, I allow my intuition to direct me as to what may be needed to help you make the connection, offer comfort, or to re-align. We may play games; watch scenes in your life; chat with angels, animals or others who are fully aligned with light and love and wish to help you; or whatever else may be needed to help you on your path. The entire journey is intuitively guided, and it will be shared as we go through your journey. If we do this for the full session, I won’t be offering feedback at the end, as everything you experienced was intuitive. However, some request that we allow time at the end of the session for this at the end of their meditations, and if that helps to reinforce your experience, we can do this as well.
I highly recommend recording your sessions, so you have a full account of what took place before, during and after the energy work. It’s the fastest and easiest way to do the feedback. For those who aren’t interested in this format, you’re also welcome to bring a notepad to write things down, or you may wish to journal about your session when you have time.
Supporting yourself during these sessions:
It’s true that your outer surroundings can only impact the quality of your session experience if you allow them to. Yet, it’s also true that until you begin to fully embrace and live this concept, your surroundings may influence you to some degree.
Please understand that I’m not saying you should force yourself to do something you don’t want to. Work with what is. Wherever you are in your process, is perfect.
However, if you’re open to the idea of distance sessions but are feeling triggered into upset by your surroundings, here are a few tips that have proven useful. None of the following suggestions are mandatory:
Go to a comfortable, quiet space, where you will not be disturbed.
If you feel your normal surroundings will disturb you, try thinking of a nearby, quiet space that you enjoy. Make sure to give yourself time to travel to that space before your session begins, so you can settle in and without feeling rushed for flustered.
If you can’t ‘get away’, consider simply going to your car, a break or conference room, a corner of the parking lot or property, or anywhere else nearby that feels somewhat private.
If you have small children in your care, perhaps put in a favorite video and position yourself so you’re not with them but able to keep an eye on them. (Just let me know – we can tailor the session to accommodate this)
If your surroundings are noisy, you may want to use earphones. They can help block distractions and keep you focused upon what we’re doing.
If you’d like the energy work done in silence, consider having some relaxing music ready to play at that time. I can also just turn up my music, and you can listen to that instead.
If you become uncomfortable in any way during the session, simply do what you need to take care of yourself. For example, if you need to use the bathroom, shift your position, move about or add/remove clothing or blankets, it’s not a problem.
Nothing will block or stop the flow of Reiki’s healing energy. You do not need to worry that movement – even getting up to go to the bathroom – would keep you from receiving your healing.
These sessions are especially useful for those who don’t have time for a session, but still wish to receive healing and intuitive feedback about their situation or condition. This format is also great for sessions for those who are unable to verbally communicate, such as infants (before and after birth), animals and others who may be unable to ‘speak’ in a traditional way, so long as I receive their soul’s permission to do the session. Without it, I will not conduct the session.
In addition, I’ve had parents who ask me to do this work with their older children or others who may be in need of assistance but who aren’t yet ready to do session work. In this situation, I also require the recipient’s soul permission. I also don’t share any information that I”m guided not to. I don’t do this to create boundaries between you and your child, but to honor their right to privacy, where desired. There’s usually plenty of information to share, even with this boundary.
With email sessions, you simply let me know if there’s anything specific you’d like to look at or work on. Then, I’ll schedule your session, so you can be aware of the timeframe in which the healing will take place. This isn’t required – you can receive the healing at any time, from anywhere. However, many like to take even a few moments to ‘tune in’, and I fully support this, if it’s what you prefer.
I usually type up the session as it’s happening, so you can know what was worked on, or ‘cleared’, and to what degree – as well as to offer any intuitive feedback that came through. This is often in the form of suggestions for things you may wish to consider doing to better support yourself or another in the healing process.
SESSION LENGTH: 60 MINUTES
Most sessions last 60 minutes, but it depends upon your needs. I ask that, if possible, you please reserve that amount of time in your schedule when you book a session, unless this doesn’t serve you. If you’re unable to do a 60 minute session, just let me know this at the start of your session.
I’m a firm believer that every little bit helps, so it’s fine if you are short on time or don’t wish to do a 60 minute session. For example, some people have very limited schedules and are only able to connect for 45-60 minutes. Others may only wish to do a ‘tune-up’ session to sustain the progress they’ve made, so they may not wish to discuss anything, but to simply receive energy work and, perhaps, some feedback at the end.
Alternately, I have clients who set an alarm for 2 hours or more at their session time, so that they can simply enjoy the relaxation they experience in session before moving into their day. In this case, rather than waking them, if needed, at the 90 minute point, I simply end the call and allow their alarm to rouse them at whatever time they’ve set. Everyone’s different – just let me know what serves you.
I can share intuitive information in your session, if you wish. As I mentioned, this can be done in several different ways before, during or after your session. However it happens, please know that I set the intention to only see or know what you are ready and/or willing to share. I will not active search for problems or secrets. I don’t believe this serves either one of us.
Also, if you prefer not to receive any intuitive feedback, that’s totally fine. The healing can take place without any of this information. If you think of the healing like an event, I use intuitive information as a means of ‘reporting on’ that event to you. The event takes place with or without my ‘report’, so you can receive healing without this information.
HOW MANY SESSIONS DOES IT TAKE TO HEAL?
I hold space for miracles in every session. Yet, while they’re always possible, healing most things is a process, not an event.
More often than not, it took time to develop the mental, emotional and behavioral patterns that created or contributed to the imbalance that’s showing up, and learning to change those patterns to support balance, wholeness and health may also take some time.
I don’t prescribe specific time frames for healing physical, mental or emotional conditions or any other situation. I think everyone needs to go at their own pace. So, whether you do multiple times a week, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly sessions, etc., you’re still bringing healing to whatever is happening. That said, the greater the challenge in your life, the more frequently you may want to have sessions – as they can often facilitate more rapid shifting in the current condition or situation.
Many clients find benefit in coming weekly if they are experiencing challenges, then switching to monthly sessions to help sustain their health and well being.
I actually don’t think of Reiki as a cure. I hoped the word would get people thinking about what it means to cure versus what it means to heal. Sure, sometimes a headache disappears after a Reiki session, but Reiki doesn’t work like aspirin. Reiki activates our natural healing mechanisms and our bodies know how to respond to Reiki to rebalance our systems. Sometimes a single session is all that is needed to bring about balance but often it isn’t and Reiki alone is sometimes not enough. I prefer to think of Reiki as a supportive healing therapy rather than a cure.
Often people who are suffering are hoping for a once-off cure, a quick fix, to end their misery but we are understanding more and more that we are holistic beings with many layers. This means we need an approach to healing that is holistic like us. Now in many ways Reiki treatment itself is holistic in that it treats the whole person and not just symptoms, but to go for a Reiki session expecting to be totally cured is mostly unrealistic. We can’t ignore good diet, exercise, sunlight, sleep, relationships and all those things that help to nourish us and make us whole. Now in some cases serious illness occurs despite a healthy lifestyle and this is where I believe Reiki can be very important in helping a person to feel better even if a cure is not possible. It’s possible to experience healing through acceptance of the unchangeable and an understanding of our deeper nature. Reiki helps us to access our deeper layers, beyond the physical body, and this alone can be a healing experience for many.
Healing is an interesting process and it is often experienced as a journey to wholeness. Constant migraines, for example, may be an outward expression of a deep inner disturbance. This could be something physical, like poor digestion. The inability to digest food could be a result of being unable to mentally process or let go of certain situations in your life. You could take an aspirin to cure the headache, which may provide temporary relief, but to really heal you need to go deeper and find the root of the problem.
It takes a lot of courage to go deeper. It’s much easier to pop a pill and ignore your body’s messages to heal. We’re afraid of what we might find if we dive beneath the surface. We don’t want to face our demons. We want everything to be nice and pleasant so instead of working with our ailments to learn more about what we need to heal deeply we attack disease to remove symptoms so we don’t have to deal with the underlying cause. Many people have asked me to cure them with Reiki. It must be made very clear that neither the practitioner nor the Reiki is responsible for curing anything. Reiki works with the receiver’s own bio-energetic mechanisms to restore balance. The extent to which healing occurs and lasts has a lot to do with an individual’s recognition of their natural capacity for self-healing. That said, I have seen even the most hardened sceptics experience positive results from Reiki treatment. It’s not that Reiki only works if you believe in it, but the depth of the healing experience seems to be much greater for those who are open to understanding themselves on deeper levels.
Once we shift the responsibility from Reiki as a cure it becomes an excellent supportive tool for healing. Reiki helps us to feel better no matter what we are struggling with. For those who are seriously ill or even facing the end of life, Reiki is a true blessing. Experiencing Reiki often causes a ripple effect of improvement in a person’s life. You might come for a Reiki session hoping to cure your migraines and be surprised to find that during the session an old relationship trauma resurfaces for attention. Over the next few weeks you find that you are finally ready to let that go. Your digestion improves and your migraines disappear. Feeling better helps us to make better choices in everyday life. It empowers us to take charge of our lives. So if you’re looking for a Reiki cure, contemplate the difference between curing and healing. Are you willing to explore the hidden dimensions of whatever ails you? Can you remove any expectations of Reiki as a cure and allow healing to happen in the way it is needed?
I practice Reiki on myself every day. I hardly ever get sick and when I do Reiki is always supportive. Reiki has a way of revealing what needs to shift much like meditation shows me what lies hidden in the deeper layers of my being. I can choose to work on my impurities or let them remain hidden. Sometimes more Reiki is what is needed and other times I know I also have to make changes in the way I relate to life in order to heal certain areas of myself. I am grateful for Reiki and its amazing ability to work with me to create shifts on every level and help me to transform. I think of life as a continual process of transformation where we decide how much we wish to grow in this life. It’s okay to have bad days. It’s okay to experience pain. Life is not all roses and dandelions. Allowing ourselves to experience the less pleasant parts of ourselves gives rise to beautiful transformation. Reiki can help us to go through these journeys gracefully.
It doesn’t happen to me very often, but on occasion it does. A client will say, “I don’t feel any different.” Or they may say, “In all honesty I didn’t feel the energy at all”.
What!!! How could the client not feel the wonderful and glorious energy that I felt and sensed whilst giving the treatment? How could they not ‘feel’ any different!!!
Please don’t despair, as the Reiki energy will still be working its magic and will still support the client on all the different levels (emotional/psychological/physical and spiritually.) Just because the client didn’t ‘feel’ anything doesn’t mean the Reiki wasn’t working.
It’s very important to have your ‘chat’ about what reiki is and what it is not, when a client first attends your practice. It’s a very good idea, to give them a run down on what they may experience (and that includes nothing).. so you could say something like:
“People sometimes experience: tingles, colours, heat, cool, floating, heaviness, sleepiness, peacefulness, or sometimes people feel nothing at all”
This gives you an opportunity to close the session, with a good discussion about what your client did or did not feel/experience after the treatment:
Reiki Practitioner: “So did you experience any of the sensations we discussed at the beginning of the appointment?”
Client: “No I’m sorry I didn’t feel a thing? I don’t think I feel any different”
Reiki Practitioner: “That’s ok, we know that some clients, feel no sensations. That’s perfectly Ok. I can still guarantee that the Reiki will have helped on many different levels, and it most certainly hasn’t caused any harm. I recommend that you keep an eye on your mood and your emotions, and your intake of water. You will probably be very thirsty over the coming days, and may have heightened emotions. If this occurs, please know that this is a natural part of Reiki. “Stuff” will be coming to the surface for you to deal with. Within a few days, you will probably feel the positives that Reiki has done for you. If you have any questions or concerns at all, please know you can ring me or email me and I will talk you through whatever you are experiencing.”
By having a deep conversation before a Reiki treatment and then at the conclusion, helps me to reassure all clients, what they’ve felt is perfectly normal. No matter what the experience. This is especially true for those rare few who don’t feel the energy during the treatment. With prior knowledge that they may not feel anything, and then the discussion afterwards is powerful in helping the client understand they are not at fault, nor have they missed out on something.
Keep in mind there could be any number of factors of why someone may not have experienced the glorious energy generated in a treatment.
- The client may have ‘high’ expectations of what Reiki is (even if you have discussed it prior)
- The client may be extremely analytical
- Perhaps Reiki is truly not the modality for them
- Maybe you are not the right Reiki practitioner for the client
- Perhaps you as the practitioner were off balance or not 100 per cent
These are just a few ideas as to why a person may not have felt the energy; however it’s important for you as a practitioner, to understand and accept that the Reiki is still helping and assisting even if the above factors are present.
A person does not need to believe in nor feel the Reiki for it to work. So please don’t lose faith in yourself or the modality of Reiki. Some people really don’t feel the benefits during the treatment and yet we know as Practitioners the amazing benefits it will reap for them in the coming days/weeks/months.
I hope it helps you to keep your faith and your belief in Reiki, when a client doesn’t feel the energy (this is bound to happen at some point in your working life).
Why Reiki Doesn’t Work Sometimes
“Why didn’t Reiki heal my problem?” That can be a tough question to answer. A lot of Reiki practitioners fall back on the “highest good” argument and talk about esoteric factors that the person is working through. And sometimes that is the reason, but sometimes they are just more obvious
There are several reasons why Reiki doesn’t work sometimes – yes, there are times when the magic just doesn’t happen.
l) The expectations of the client are just too high:
A practitioner should never claim that Reiki can make miracles. If a client comes to you thinking they will be instantly cured of what ails them and they aren’t here’s why. Reiki doesn’t work that way. Multiple applications are required, probably some life style changes or emotional and attitude changes need to be met like stop smoking, drinking, leave job or relationship that is not working for you anymore, etc. Other healing modalities may need to be happening simultaneously like massage, Acupuncture, Herbs, Psychotherapy, Medication, etc.
2) The client is closed off, unreceptive, super skeptical:
I’ve seen this happen many times, people will come to you for treatment claiming they want to get well, to heal, to feel good, but when they get on the table, there is just not much going on. They are literally blocking the energy. They don’t trust the practitioner, they don’t trust Reiki and they don’t really want to make the changes necessary to heal their life and circumstances.
Often we say a person doesn’t need to believe Reiki will work, but the truth is, their belief helps. The more receptive the person is, the better the energy flow and the more effective Reiki will be.
3) Skill of the healer:
Kind of a no-brainer; the better the practitioner is at moving energy, the better the energy will flow, the more energy will go where it is needed, and the better the results. This is why it is important for practitioners to connect with Reiki often.
Just like everything else, practice makes perfect. If you are new to Reiki, don’t do self-treating on yourself daily, and work on very few Reiki others, then the Reiki you channel will reflect that the more Reiki you do on yourself or others and the more levels of training you go up in Reiki, the more energy you will feel coming out of yours hands because you will be a purer channel for the energy. This is one of the main reasons why I am very against a Level One or Level Two practitioner doing Reiki on the public and charging for it. They are not channeling the full flow of the Reiki energy that their system can handle (you only do that at the Master Level) and lack experience.
4) Too attached to the outcome:
Have you ever heard the phrase – it’s about the journey, not the destination”? Healing brings many revelations and lessons with it, it’s said thta your greatest pain/challenge is your greatest fuel for reinvention. When you want a specific outcome and you don’t get it, then you’re disappointed. Garth Brooks wrote the song “Thank God for Unanswered Prayers.” The outcome you think you want may not be in your best interests and the lessons from whatever you have going on in your life will not be learned. Life is all about learning lessons for your soul growth, the evolution of your soul.
5) Severity of the problem:
The more severe the problem is, the more energy it will take to resolve it.
6) Age of the subject:
Younger subjects tend to have better energy flow and less built up “junk” energy.
The environment that the recipient lives in is a very important factor. This not only includes their domicile, but also their work environment, recreation environment, etc… Included in all of these is the people that are present. Negative people are going to weigh down the energy of the recipient.
8) Emotional factors:
The emotions the recipient regularly experiences are a big factor in their healing. Someone who is regularly stressed, angry, anxious, afraid, or experiencing other negative emotions will have a lower energy vibration and be less receptive to Reiki.
This is that “highest good” one. Past karma will definitely impact your ability to receive healing. And you don’t have to believe in reincarnation; karma generated from actions in this life has a very real effect on your current energy.
As I looked at these factors, I realized that the Reiki practitioners have control over exactly ONE of them; they can control, the Skill of the healer, and nothing else.
Reiki practitoners can do things to influence, receptivity. This includes things like setting the environment of the treatment space to be relaxing, having the recipient visualize appropriate healing imagery, and recite prayers, phrases, or mantras to help open up their energy flow.
If seeing the recipient regularly, a Reiki practitioner can influence- Severity of the problem, Environment, and Emotional Factors. Seeing a client regularly allows the practitioner to catch new issue early, as well as, provide guidance to help the recipient improve their environment and emotional life. Again, these three can really only be affected if the practitioner has regular contact with the recipient.
So why doesn’t Reiki always work?
The truth is Reiki always works, at some level and to some degree. But a person shouldn’t go to a Reiki healer and expect that the healer is going to do all the work. They are accountable for their own self, and they are responsible for eight of the nine factors of a successful Reiki treatment. There is a reason Richard Gordon says the healer is the person who is sick and gets better. The sick person controls their fate.
And for the Reiki practitioners who ask “Why should I go to so much trouble to hone my skill when it’s only a small part of the results?” We do it because it’s the part we can control, and we do not want to be the weak link in the healing process.
