Reiki in Hospitals

Reiki in Hospitals

Reiki (Universal Life Force) is a holistic energy therapy most commonly facilitated by light touch, which is believed to balance the biofield and strengthen the body’s ability to heal itself. This healing has been used primarily by individuals in a daily practice that helps energize, realign, and rebalance energy in the body. Today, however, Reiki is joining other complementary therapies in the conventional settings of hospitals, hospices, counseling centers, emergency rooms, intensive care units. Nurses, physical therapists, surgeons, midwives, anesthetists report that Reiki can help mange pain and promote healing. Counselors and caregivers treating those with illnesses find that Reiki gives patients an increased physical, emotional, and psychological ability to cope. Reiki can be used in a variety of settings to balance energy and create optimum conditions needed for healing and is a non- risk and low- cost therapy. At hospitals and clinics across America, Reiki is beginning to gain acceptance as a meaningful and cost-effective way to improve patient care. Personal interviews conducted with medical professionals corroborate this view.”Reiki sessions cause patients to heal faster with less pain,” says Marilyn Vega, RN, a private-duty nurse at the Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital in New York. [Reiki] accelerates recovery from surgery, improves mental attitude and reduces the negative effects of medication and other medical procedures. Reiki is being used at a growing number of progressive hospitals across the US, and in many others throughout the world, to augment conventional therapy and reduce the patients’ time in the hospital and need for medication (especially pain-relieving medication). Along with Reiki, it is beneficial to teach patients to use imagery/visualization to help heal themselves because it has been clinically proven to support the body’s immune response to infections and cancer with a measurable increase in WBC and NK cells; the converse is also true, when a patient gives up the will to live, by the way. Reiki is better accepted by conventional doctors and hospitals if it is explained in conventional terms, such as promoting relaxation and healing, rather than in metaphysical terms. Reiki is proving benefitial in hospitals, nursing homes, emergency rooms, operating rooms, neonatal units; facilitating relaxation while also decreasing anxiety and pain.

Why Hospitals Like Reiki

Hospitals are undergoing major changes. They are experiencing a need to reduce costs and at the same time improve patient care. Under the old medical model based on expensive medication and technology this posed an unsolvable dilemma. Not so with Reiki and other complementary modalities. Reiki requires no technology at all and many of its practitioners offer their services for free. Reiki is therefore a very good way to improve care while cutting costs. Hospitals are embracing Reiki and listening to what their patients request A survey conducted in 2007 indicated that in the previous year 1.2 million adults and 161,000 children in the U.S. received one or more energy healing sessions such as Reiki. A 2008 USA Today article reported that in 2007 15% of U.S. hospitals (over 800) offered Reiki treatments as a regular part of patient services. A research study at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut indicated that Reiki improved patient sleep by 86 percent, reduced pain by 78 percent, reduced nausea by 80 percent, and reduced anxiety during pregnancy by 94 percent. Edmonton’s Cross Cancer Institute concluded that Reiki healing showed a highly significant reduction in pain in a pain management study including cancer. One of the things they both encourage is creating hospital “Reiki Rooms,” staffed by volunteers, where patients as well as hospital staff can come to receive Reiki treatments. Bettina Peyton, M.D., one of the physicians Libby and Maggie have trained states: “Reiki’s utter simplicity, coupled with its potentially powerful effects, compels us to acknowledge the concept of a universal healing energy.” It seems the use of Reiki therapy in hospitals is on the increase. Certainly the number of medical institutions that have registered their details on the Reiki in Hospitals web site has almost doubled in the last six months. But what is particularly significant is that these recent registrants include some of the biggest names in healthcare, with Harvard and Yale affiliates listed among them. Equally significant is the general consensus on what the medical teams and patients are reporting about Reiki, namely that Reiki therapy is having very beneficial effects on the health of patients. The Harvard–affiliated Dana–Farber Cancer Institute is one example, stating on its web site that Reiki “has been found to be effective in helping every known illness, including cancer”.

The following excerpt is from ‘A Review of Reiki’ ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES, MAR/APR 2003, VOL. 9, NO.2

“There are many hospitals which have programs that incorporate Reiki into the clinical setting. Program administrators, staff and patients report a number of benefits including reduced anxiety and lower use of pain medications, increased patient satisfaction for surgical patients, and decreased numbers of self-reported common gerontological complaints such as anxiety, loneliness, insomnia, and pain among older individuals living in the community. Reiki can easily fit within the harm reduction model and can be successfully used in self-treatment in combination with appropriate medical/psychiatric care by people with combined HIV and psychiatric diagnoses for emotional centering, pain management, and support in recovery readiness. Children with cancer and their families practice First degree Reiki on themselves and one another. Reiki is a supportive therapy for hospice and hospitals. Reiki appears to be an effective stress reduction technique that easily integrates into conventional medicine because it involves neither the use of substances nor manipulative touch that might be contraindicated or carry unknown risks, and because the protocol for Reiki treatments is flexible, adopting to both the need of the patient and of the medical circumstances. Reiki can be used to support conventional medical interventions. In addition, when used on a conscious patient, the experience is relaxing and pleasant, increasing patient comfort, enhancing relationships with caregivers, and possibly reducing side effects of procedures and medications. Staff report they enjoy giving Reiki treatments. Caregivers who routinely have to hurt patients in order administer needed medical care express gratitude for a tool that minimizes patient discomfort and quickly soothes distressed children. There is limited but promising preliminary research evidence for Reiki’s use in pain management.”

Meditation has many positive benefits. Ten minutes a day can enhance people whole life and help them to feel happier and more fulfilled. MORE ENERGY – Calming the mind gives the body time to recharge its batteries. People may benefit by experiencing deeper, more restful sleep, increased energy and stamina, and by losing locked-in stress and physical tension.

BETTER CONCENTRATION – Meditation aims to replace the mind’s jumble of ideas and thoughts with inner stillness. As a result, people may find the mental agility sharper, the concentration clearer, and thoughts more focused.

PEACE OF MIND – Inner peace and serenity – the goal of all meditation – helps to reduce the effects of everyday stress, promotes calmness and gives a compassionate respect for all life. Meditation unites mind & body.

SELF-AWARENESS – Meditation often expands the awareness in heart and mind that will make people life richer and more fulfilled. Meditation helps people to become a whole person, put them in harmony with the universe and inspire them to find their own creativity and inner resources. It can unlock the doors of the understanding and provide valuable insight to oneself and others. Although meditation is a very personal experience, a meditation class may give to some people the motivation they need to sit still in silence for a significant length of time and inspire them to stick and go deeper with their ‘inner journey’ around like-minded people.

Many studies have demonstrated the physical, emotional and psychological beneficial effects of meditation, which include: Less heart disease Lower cholesterol levels Lower blood pressure levels Reduce of anxiety Reversal of arteriosclerosis (hardened arteries) Reduce angina (chest pain) and chronic pain Lower levels of stress hormones in the blood Reduce depression Help to resolve sleep problems Increased confidence, awareness, creativity and general health

Also: Reiki works naturally to facilitate healing. It helps the healing effects of medical therapies, as well as counseling. It does not interfere with any form of medical treatment. It can be used on people of any age — from infants to the elderly — and in any state of health, including hospice care. It can reduce the unwanted side effects of medical therapies. It can shorten healing time, help with pain control, reduce stress, tension, anxiety and depression, reduce swelling, inflammation and bleeding, and lower blood pressure and heart rate. It is gentle enough to reduce the discomforts of pregnant women and can help ease the pain of childbirth. Reiki is not massage nor is it a tool for diagnosing illness and should not be considered a substitute for medical treatment.

What Happens In a Reiki Session?

Reiki is performed in an area or space that allows for complete and total relaxation, free from outside noises and distractions, often using soothing music to help aid in the relaxation process. It can be received while sitting in a chair or lying in a bed and through casts and bandages. Clothing is never removed. The Reiki practitioner places his or her hands lightly on or slightly above several areas of the head, upper body, back, and on the arms and legs. The practitioner’s hands may also be placed over or on an injured area or an area of pain or discomfort.

How Reiki Works

It is important to know and understand that the Reiki practitioner is not doing the healing. Healing energy flows through not from the practitioner. Reiki works by encouraging the healing processes of the body and mind and by restoring and balancing the flow of energy in the body. The body itself regulates the amount of energy it receives and where it goes. Although Reiki techniques may appear simple, the effects and results vary from person to person. Most people experience deep relaxation and feel calm and peaceful. After a session, they feel refreshed and renewed. A number of sessions may be required for optimal results.

What Practitioners and Patients Have to Say

Practitioners and patients benefit from Reiki in numerous ways,  “Practitioners and patients who use Reiki therapy attest to its ability to promote relaxation, ease pain and pave the way for healing.” Finding balance among a patient’s body, mind, and emotions seems to be a key element in practicing Reiki in a hospital setting. Used in conjunction with medical treatment, Reiki helps patients deal with what is often the intense stress of an illness. There is the added bonus of letting the patient know that the hospital cares for his or her overall well being and providing more quality time between the patient and a member of the hospital medical team. Practitioner also points out that the use of Reiki contributes teaching its clients how to manage or correct at-risk conditions before they lead to a more serious illness. Perhaps a practitioner correctly emphasizes: “’I find the practice of Reiki very rewarding, as a practitioner. Patients have reported deep relaxation and a sense of profound healing, after one session. I feel that Reiki is a huge asset for any hospital setting, because patients sense that they are in a truly caring environment.’”
